Impressions Collection

‘Impressions’ is an evolution of my graduate collection that explored losing or gaining value based on people’s perceptions. Within my graduate collection, I explored themes of value and how something can lose or gain value based upon people’s perceptions. I used the two pence coin to explore this; the bronze two pence coins were worth more in their metal weight than the 2 pence they were ascribed yet they are unwanted. However attitudes change when the coin is older. No one wants a modern penny but if it’s Victorian suddenly it’s value increases tenfold. Small differences in the design for instance, if Queen Victoria had a ribbon in her hair or a different set of pearls added even more value.

Playing with the idea of the ‘language’ of coins, I created the Impressions collection. I created the collection pieces using just hints of different coin designs, to give the impression of a coin. I have added value through using silver, a more precious metal than bronze. However by not having enough markings to visually be a coin, the pieces have no currency value.
